What is the Parish Nursing Health Ministry?
The Parish Nursing Ministry is a faith centred health ministry, which emphasizes the
wholeness of body, mind and spirit within the congregation and the community.The ministry is based on the assumption that the church is a place of health
and healing and has a role in linking faith and health. Healing was at the heart of
Jesus ministry and the church has been engaged in healing ministries throughout
history.
Who are the members of the Health Ministry at Central United?
The Health Ministry consists of a Parish Nurse and a group of supportive and committed
church members who have formed a Health Cabinet.

What does the Health Ministry do?
The Parish Nurse and Health Cabinet work with the clergy and other members of the
congregation to meet the holistic health needs of all members of our congregation and
community. This group develops, implements and evaluates programs and services in response
to the identified needs of our congregation and the community in which we live.
What qualifications are required for a Parish Nurse?
The Parish Nurse is a nurse registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and
the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO). She has current health related
knowledge, and a specialized knowledge of health ministry. To qualify for the position,
the Parish Nurse must complete the three year educational program (consisting of classroom
and practicum experience) offered by the InterChurch Health Ministries at Emmanuel
College, University of Toronto. Participating in ongoing educational opportunities,
documentation and confidentiality are essential to the Parish Nursing practice.
What is the role of the Parish Nurse?
The Parish Nurse:
- interprets the role which faith plays in the well-being of the
community,
- empowers individuals to become more active partners in the management
of their personal health resources,
- offers support and encouragement during times of celebration and
crisis,
- focuses on health promotion and illness prevention,
- provides referral resources, advocacy and coordination of services,
- is a health educator and a personal health and faith counselor,
- encourages and facilitates congregational participation in health
ministry,
- avoids duplication of existing services.
An important part of our ministry is our
Prayer Chain
Originally founded in 1987 the Prayer Chain has prayed for God's help on
behalf of many families and their concerns daily. This group of dedicated members
continues to provide its valuable mission to the congregation by supporting them in
prayer. Specific requests are welcomed and remain confidential within the
Prayer Chain. Please contact the church to place a request.
